A grandfather is talking with his grandson and he says there are two wolves inside of us which are always at war with each other.

One of them is a good wolf which represents things like kindness, bravery and love. The other is a bad wolf, which represents things like greed, hatred and fear.

The grandson stops and thinks about it for a second then he looks up at his grandfather and says, “Grandfather, which one wins?”

The grandfather quietly replies, the one you feed

I was a freshman in high school the first time that I heard this story.

This story was introduced to a bunch of high school freshman by a man named Brian Dassler.

On March 20, 2017, Dr. Dassler passed away.

Dassler was a friend too many and a teacher too all

Dr. Dassler was a hard working man who, believed in having a strong attitude for achievement

and being healthy. The first time I met him was in 2010. I was participating in an orientation for

students that never attended a KIPP school. Dr. Dassler knew our name when we first walked

into the door. He gave each student his undivided attention.

At KIPP, when students made bad decisions, he would tell us the story of the chereokee Indian

and the wolves. If there is anything that Dr. Dassler taught to friends and students, it was to

have a growth mindset. The growth mindset was to embrace challenges, persists in the face of

set backs, see effort as the path to mastery, learn from criticism, and find lessons and

inspiration in the success of others. My growth mindset allowed me to beat the odds of

attending Xavier University, while many others doubted me.

Dr. Dassler was an educator who truly cared for his students. He knew who they were, where

they came from, and their stories. He was one of a kind.

This blog was dedicated to the late Brian Dassler who left behind a brilliant legacy. Thank you.
